The Most Precious Christmas Gift Is Called Bruno

The picture above shows Bruno at seven months old during his very first photo session. It remains one of my favourite images of him. He simply would not sit still for more than a few seconds — very typical of our little Yorkie.

But let me start at the beginning.

For many years, Klaus and I were the trusted dog sitters for several close friends whenever they went on vacation. We have always loved dogs, yet never felt ready to commit to having one of our own. Why? For more than thirty years, I had four-legged companions in my life from time to time — dogs I could care for, spoil, and enjoy, without taking on the full responsibility of ownership.

Over the years in Vancouver, we looked after Dos Pesos, Maple, Carlos, TJ, Simba, and Charlie. Every one of them was a loving soul who brought joy, laughter, and companionship into our home. We cherished every moment with them and happily pampered them while they stayed with us.

People often asked when I would finally adopt a dog of my own. My answer was always the same: I could never quite bring myself to take on that responsibility full-time. And so the years passed. We continued caring for our friends’ beloved fur babies, and although we always enjoyed having the house to ourselves again afterward, each dog left a little paw print on our hearts.

Having a dog is undoubtedly a great responsibility, but the love and happiness they give in return are immeasurable. They truly are the most lovable creatures.

We moved to Calgary in the fall. Around that same time, close friends of ours returned from a short vacation and welcomed a Yorkshire Terrier into their lives in October. Shortly afterward, they went away again for a week and left little Liam with the breeder for dog sitting.

When the time came to pick him up, we joined them before heading to dinner together afterward. The moment Liam saw his humans again was unforgettable — he was absolutely overjoyed, bouncing with excitement and happiness at being reunited with them.

The breeder then asked whether we might also like a cute little Yorkie. Before I could even think of an answer, she gently placed a tiny black puppy — Liam’s brother — into my arms.

In that very moment, something happened between us. The little black Yorkie completely melted in my arms … and so did I.

Klaus and I thought about it for two days. Then I finally called the breeder and told her that we would love to adopt the little black one.

Once all the moving boxes had been unpacked, we brought him home on December 1st. Suddenly, we found ourselves the proud parents of a tiny, lively bundle of energy.

His name is Bruno when he behaves — otherwise, he is simply our little mutt.

It only took a few days for him to feel completely at home. In fact, he became so comfortable so quickly that he seemed convinced he was now the boss of the house.

dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.

And just like that, we spontaneously became dog parents. It truly was love at first sight — fortunately for all of us.
