White on White

Paperwhites are cherished for their light, refined fragrance—softly sweet without being overpowering. As they bloom, their scent gently fills a room, creating a calm and elegant atmosphere that feels especially fitting during the winter months.

For a simple yet beautiful display, plant your Narcissus papyraceus bulbs in a white container to enhance their clean, minimalist look. Once planted, cover the soil with a layer of decorative faux snow to create a wintry scene. Water sparingly and with care, as excess moisture may cause the snow to dissolve and run over the edge of the pot. As the bulbs grow and patches of soil begin to show, simply top up with more snow to maintain the illusion.
This understated arrangement evokes the quiet beauty of winter indoors—fresh, luminous, and effortlessly elegant.

Once your paperwhites are in full bloom, they can be cut and arranged in a tall vase, where their graceful stems and delicate fragrance can be enjoyed even more closely.
Indoor narcissi—commonly known as Narcissus papyraceus—are typically available from September through February. They are wonderfully easy to grow, blooming within three to five weeks after planting. For a continuous display of their softly scented flowers throughout the winter, plant the bulbs at staggered intervals. They thrive equally well in soil or nestled among pebbles with just enough water to reach their roots.
Growing paperwhites is also a delightful activity for children. Planting the bulbs in clear, watertight glass containers filled with pebbles and water allows them to observe the entire process—from the first fine roots forming to the emergence of stems and the eventual unfurling of blossoms. It’s a simple and engaging way to connect with the rhythm of growth.
Each bulb produces several flower-bearing stems, creating a full and abundant display. To keep them looking their best, ensure they are consistently and adequately watered throughout their blooming period, as the roots should never be allowed to dry out.
Narcissus care
Put the paperwhite narcissus in a bright location, avoiding direct hot sunlight. Water thoroughly, allowing the soil to become slightly dry to the touch between water applications. Do not let stand in excess water. Cooler locations will extend flower life. Pinch off flower stems after flowering, plant in garden for repeat flowering next year.
