Modern Cottage Chic Christmas Decor

Cottage chic—often described as cottage style or a more refined take on shabby chic—is an interior design aesthetic that blends rustic charm, vintage nostalgia, and cozy comfort with a light, airy touch of understated elegance.

It evokes the feeling of a gentle retreat from the pace of modern life, creating a space that is relaxed, welcoming, and effortlessly lived-in. Rather than striving for perfection, cottage chic embraces patina, soft wear, and the beauty of imperfection, resulting in an atmosphere that feels both authentic and deeply comforting.

A Plate Filled with Christmas Chocolate and a Papier Mâché Nicholas

an illustration of a most precious Christmas tree

A lovely selection of Christmas chocolates sent by my sister-in-law from Switzerland brings a touch of indulgence and nostalgia. Each piece reflects a hint of Alpine tradition—rich and carefully crafted—making the gift feel extra special. The charming papier-mâché Nicholas standing nearby, is one of may favorite Christmas decorations. The plate with the sweets toghther with Nicolas create a lovely vigniette, and a small reminder of the famlily connection.

In the background stands the Christmas tree that inspired the above illustration.

A Nutty Display

A display of nuts and red tealights arranged on a wooden platter evokes the feeling of Christmas in a cozy mountain cabin. For a more refined look, group the nuts by type rather than scattering them randomly. A simple bag of mixed nuts in their shells works perfectly—just sort them into small clusters. Here, hazelnuts, almonds, walnuts, and pecans are arranged individually, creating a display that feels both natural and thoughtfully styled.

A Red and Green Basket Case

Finished arrangement with Pink Lady apples, red roses, pine twigs, and a luxurious red ribbon.

This rather unique arrangement is composed with red roses, red apples and fir tree twiggs sits in a basket. This flower and apple arrangement lasts for a good week if the floral foam is kept moist. The apples or the roses can be replaced with red baubles.

Materials used

basket lined with plastic (diameter: 9″)
Oasis floral foam
3 small red apples
12 small red roses (roses can be replaced by wired small red baubles)
greenery
skewers
1 yard of wide, red ribbon

Instructions

Cut the floral foam (Oasis) to fit the basket and soak it thoroughly with water.

Trim the greenery into pieces about 4 inches long, removing roughly 1 inch of needles from the ends. Insert the greenery into the foam, working in circular layers from the outside inward.

Prepare the roses in the same way, then place them into the foam, arranging them in a loose triangular shape.

Insert a 4-inch skewer into the base of each apple and position them between the roses.

Finish by weaving the ribbon generously between the roses and apples.

Water the arrangement daily to keep it fresh.
