How to Safely Store Your Christmas Decorations

After the end-of-year holidays, it’s time to store away the Christmas decorations, ensuring an organized and efficient unpacking for next year. Consider reusing empty containers such as shoeboxes or wine crates—these are perfect for holiday storage. To prevent breakage, opt for boxes with individual compartments, which provide cushioning and make stacking and storing easier.
WHEN SHOULD YOU PUT AWAY CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS?
While Christmas trees and decorations appear earlier each year to brighten our homes, tradition holds that these adornments should be removed during the night of January 5th to 6th, or after Twelfth Night on January 6th, the day of Epiphany. This timing is symbolic: guided by the twinkling lights, the Three Wise Men are believed to arrive 12 days after Christmas to present their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Removing decorations before this period is thought to risk bad luck and to prevent the Wise Men from arriving safely.
SORTING CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS
Once the festivities conclude, it’s helpful to sort your decorations before packing them away. Discard or donate damaged, obsolete, or broken items—such as aging garlands, worn-out ornaments, or shattered baubles—to make unpacking next year more enjoyable. Take this opportunity to clean your decorations: dust off small ornaments, wipe candle holders, and remove wax from tealight holders to keep everything in good condition for next season.
STORING CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
Untangling tangled light garlands is a common holiday headache. To store them properly, use simple household items like cardboard tubes from toilet paper or kitchen towels. After flattening the roll, cut notches at the ends, then carefully wind the light strings around it—either from top to bottom or vice versa. Alternatively, slide the battery pack into the roll, and secure the end with a clip. This method keeps your lights tangle-free and ready to use next year.
STORING CHRISTMAS BAUBLES
Fragile baubles require special care. If the original packaging was discarded, look for suitable alternatives such as drawer organizers or small storage boxes. Wrap glass ornaments in crumpled paper collected from gift wrapping or in soft fabric, then place them in shoeboxes. You can also create custom separators from cardboard to protect the ornaments based on their size and shape. Smaller balls can be stored in egg cartons, while ornaments with unusual shapes—like candy canes—fit well into paper cups, which can then be stored in a box
