"I gave it my best to express all the agony and ecstasy of love through my music." The Russian composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born in 1840. It's said that Tchaikovsky started composing at the tender age of 14. Nevertheless he started a career in the justice department and only after that he started to study music. He gave his first concert in 1871 and during the following years he wrote relentlessly new music. In the late 1880ties his physical health was not as good anymore. He suffered from asthma, had stomach problems. He was also very concerned about getting older and therefore wrote his will in 1891. Tchaikovsky marries in 1875 a former student of his. It was not a reunion formed out of love. At the same time Tchaikovsky received some commissions from a wealthy widow who also started to support him financially. Although the widow and Tchaikovsky communicated almost daily by letters, during their fifteen-year relationship they never once met. Tchaikovsky finishes one of his most successful operas Queen of Spades in 1890 and starts shortly thereafter his only concert tour to America. He was there for the opening of Carnegie Hall. After his return to Russia he composed The Nutcracker. Unfortunately Tchaikovsky did not live long enough to see the success this ballet would have. Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky died in 1893 in St. Petersburg. [ Back to index ] |
