Secret Landscapes of Flowers

Barbara Bordnick

With the words of the great English poet in mind, contemporary photographer Barbara Bordnick has embarked on her own intimate reading of Nature, one that reveals the world of flowers to possess an abundance of secrets in the form of shapes, textures, and colors of deep and mesmerizing allure. Once smitten, Bordnick confesses, "I became enveloped and absorbed by the indescribable color, the surprising twists, the curls, and the artful reaches of their bodies - their secret landscape." Indeed we see that close up, a flower, or even just a detail of one, has an almost mystical power to consume one's attention and imagination. As small and as contained as they are, their unique combinations of textures, patterns, and colors reflect a vast, inviting universe - one filled with moments of intimate encounter, where something eternal feels glimpsed. Searchings is one photographer's personal journey to record these moments. With each of her images, Bordnick quietly underscores the unlimited nature and form of flowers, while celebrating their unique and exquisite beauty.

Portraits of Intimacy

Adam Kufeld

Award-winning photographer Adam Kufeld takes on the always popular subject of flowers in a fresh and provocative way, using a close-range lens to describe the intricate, surprising forms hidden inside blossoms. His macro lens allows Kufeld to capture detail invisible to the naked eye, and take advantage of the naturally brilliant color and suggestive forms of petal, stamen, and pistil to create images that transform their subject. His elegant, stylized, seductive portraits depict common garden flowers, including morning glories, bougainvillea, daisies, poppies, lilies, zinnias, roses, and passion flowers, as well as more exotic varieties, such as orchids. His original GiclČe prints, on traditional watercolor paper, have been hugely successful in exhibition. Flowers: Portraits of Intimacy includes more than 60 photographs captioned with the common name of the flower and an introduction by acclaimed floral designer Rebecca Cole.

"I wanted the flowers to be free from vases and tabletops. In retrospect, that sense of freedom within order was something I needed myself." Debra Heimerdinger

A Book of Flowers

Debra Heimerdinger (Photographer), Colette

Depending on the circumstances, their use signifies a broad spectrum of feelings - joy, grief, remorse, desire, love, sorrow, appreciation, and hope. But the language of flowers aside, flowers themselves are as varied in effect as the uses they are put to. Consider the delicacy of lilies of the valley and the drama of black tulips; the sensuality of an orchid and the purity of a white rose; the mystery of opium poppies and the familiarity of daisies. The form and color of flowers as well as the ways in which they are used communicate specific messages. Beyond those aspects, there are the infinitely varied associations we bring to flowers based on our own memories and experiences. The scent of lilacs, for example, can call to mind the first, exquisite note of spring for one person and for another be a sickly reminder of a tedious cousin's perfume.
