Victorian treeA Victorian Tree

This tree was standing in a shop window as well. It is a well executed version of a Victorian tree.

The tree was decorated with stockings made from luxurious fabrics, gloves, gold and beige ornaments, a beautiful color-coordinated ribbon, and mini-lights.

Very Victorian

Allison Dick

The Victorians were never known for doing anything half way, and Christmas was no exception. This was an era that focused on lavish decorating in celebration of the bounty of the holiday season. If you're feeling extravagant, then this decorating style is definitely for you.

In keeping with Victorian tradition, the Christmas tree should be the focal point of your living space. Use decorations with rich detail. These can include cloth decorations highlighted with beading, embroidery and exquisite trims such as brocade and ribbon.

Glass ornaments and gingerbread people are a must. Small decorations in the shape of toys, musical instruments, books and cherubs are also in period. Use red and/or gold ribbon too. You can tie small bows to branches, or intertwine longer pieces around your tree.

The Victorian era also saw the first appearance of lights on trees. Up to that point, candles and miniature lanterns were used sparingly because of the fire hazard they posed. Use only white lights for an authentic Victorian look. Top it all off with a beautiful angel or star for the top of the tree.

For gift-wrap, focus on papers that are intricately patterned and finish them with ribbon. Or go to the other extreme. Use brown craft paper and simple red or green ribbon for an equally authentic look.

As great lovers of horticulture, the Victorians included plants reminiscent of the season in their decorating. Use pine boughs on banisters and decorated wreaths on doors. Put poinsettias and holly on display, as well as that old favourite, mistletoe.

The dinner table is another place to show your Victorian flare. Use a lace tablecloth for a truly authentic look. Brocade place mats and runners are another nice touch, along with crystal and gold trimmed glassware. Of course, lots of candles and lanterns add warmth to the look.
