One Dozen Tips for Safely Having a Decorated Christmas Tree at Home

Article by Dr. Marcelo M. Hirschler

  • If you use a natural Christmas tree, make sure you water it often (preferably every day).

  • Keep any Christmas tree clear of fireplaces, radiators, TV sets or other sources of heat.

  • Make sure your Christmas tree lights have a listing label (for example UL).

  • Before placing light strings on the Christmas tree, check that the lights work properly.

  • Before using, make sure your light cords have no frayed or bare wires or loose connections.

  • Before using, make sure your light cords have no cracks or broken or empty sockets.

  • Don't repair decorative lights; replace them to be safe rather than sorry.

  • Don't overload electrical circuits; use fused power strips and not multi-plug adapters.

  • Keep all paper products and packages away from the decorative lights.

  • Always turn your Christmas tree lights off before going to bed or leaving the house.

  • Keep light strings and other electrical decorations out of children's reach.

  • Candles are not recommended, but if you do use them, never, ever leave the tree unattended.
